Literary Society
The Hempstead Literary Society is a book club, run in conjunction with Carnegie Stout Public Library. We meet once a month during the school year. Students are provided with a free book to keep, a great discussion and usually some snacks!
Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is a yearly competition open to all Hempstead students. Teams are required to read 12 titles (typically the Iowa High School Award winning books) and answer questions in a competition format against teams from Dubuque Senior, Wahlert, Bellevue, Galena, East Dubuque and Cuba City. The event takes place on last Thursday in February at either Hempstead or Senior.
Take Home Activity Bags
Each month, Hempstead students can stop by the library and pick up a free activity bag. Within each bag is everything needed to complete a small craft. Quantities are limited. Here is what we have planned for the 22-23 school year:

Book Swap
In May the Hempstead Library hosts a student/staff book swap. Patrons can bring in gently used books to swap for "new" books.
